City Deep

City Deep hailed as Africa’s largest dry port, is situated in the heart of South Africa’s most industrious city, Johannesburg. Its history dates back to 1977 and was developed by the South African Railways (SARS). It connects to the Durban Port which is the largest container port in South African and second largest in Africa - behind Port Said in Egypt. Crown

Located in the heart of industrial Johannesburg, you will find the bustling node of Crown. Surrounded by other centres of business and industry such as Selby, Fordsburg and Mayfair, this suburb is essentially made up of three parts ( Crown Mines, Crown City and Crown North) and is home to a rich history that made way for its current industrial landscape.

The History of Crown 

Emerging from the growth of industry following the Witwatersrand Gold Rush, Crown shares a name with one of the largest gold producers of the early 19th century. The Crown Mine is said to have produced approximately 1.4m kg kilograms of gold over its 90-year lifespan before shutting its doors in the 1970’s. Now located at Gold Reef City’s amusement park (which is a mere 3.6 km away from Crown central), the surviving mine shaft, was opened in 1897 and was, at that time, one of the deepest gold mines in the world - worked by 30 000 miners.

This part of Johannesburg was then established as part of the gold reef, stretching roughly 100 km between Boksburg and Randfontein.
