Now located at Gold Reef City’s amusement park (which is a mere 3.6 km away from Crown central), the surviving mine shaft, was opened in 1897 and was, at that time, one of the deepest gold mines in the world - worked by 30 000 miners.
This part of Johannesburg was then established as part of the gold reef, stretching roughly 100 km between Boksburg and Randfontein.
