A Multi-Million Rand Upgrade to Key Roads in Amalgam
Category Industrial Property News
The success of Amalgam’s industrial sector is owed to a diverse network of arterial routes that connect the suburb to various locations throughout Johannesburg, Gauteng and the wider South Africa. This “connectivity” has enabled businesses to grow and thrive as they can transport goods easily throughout the country and employees can travel to and from their workplaces with ease. In recent times, the main roads along Amalgam had experienced significant wear and tear due to increased traffic volumes and high congestion. Noticing this, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has embarked on a R30 million upgrade to the M2 West Highway, Main Reef Road and linked extensions. This is expected to ease congestion and improve access.
Amalgam is a high growth node that is experiencing an influx of new businesses primarily from the manufacturing, warehousing and logistics sectors. This growth has contributed to high congestion as more businesses and employees access these roads. JRA Managing Director, Sean Phillips, explains in a press release that the team undertook in-depth research to undercover the main roads responsible for congestion along Main Reef Road, and attributed it to Production Road and Miriam Makeba Street as both are undergoing intense development.
The Importance of Main Reef Road
Main Reef Road runs along the border of Amalgam and is an imperative link that connects businesses to the surrounding freeways, including the M1, M2, M7, N1 and R24. These freeways form the backbone of Johannesburg’s road network.
A Closer Look at the Project
The upgrade commenced on May 11 (2018) at midnight and is planned to last until December 15, with construction taking place after hours, from 19:00 pm until 05:00 am daily. These hours will allow for the process to be accelerated with minimal interruption to road users.
Lone Rock Contractors and Nyaleti Engineers are the contractors assigned to the project, and they will facilitate three upgrades. This includes, road widening between Treu road, Park Drive and Crownwood Road, adding a new lane from Church Street up to the M1 and M2 motorways and improvements to traffic signals.
Once completed, it is hoped that the upgrade will help contribute to the city’s goal of a 5% economic growth by 2021.
Creating Employment
Through the years, the Amalgam industrial sector has been instrumental in creating employment opportunities for the community, and this tradition is now upheld through the project as 30% of the jobs are allocated to local people who live in and around the area.
