Pomona on the Rise to become Kempton Park's new Industrial Hotspot
Category Industrial Property News
Pomona is situated on the eastern outskirts of Kempton Park and is fast becoming this particular suburb's new industrial hotspot.
Spartan has for years been Kempton Park's go-to industrial zone, as the area is filled with chemical manufacturing plants, distribution sites and is highly established. However, Pomona has shown many opportunities and promise in recent years and may soon be on the path to competing with Spartan for the title of Kempton Park's key industrial hotspot.
A major advantage that Pomona has over Spartan is the ability for growth. While Spartan doesn't have much more room for developments, Pomona has kilometres of vacant land as it is on the outskirts of the town. Pomona makes for the perfect industrial area as it is located far away from Kempton Park's residential suburbs- allowing for further industrial opportunities and the use of heavy engineering machinery.
Many large investments have been put into Pomona, with numerous prominent companies buying up land in the area. Just some of the brands that have premises in Pomona include Tile Africa, Omega Storage, and DHL.
OneLogix, specialised logistics group, have recently acquired a 2-hectare property alongside their original Pomona facility. The property cost OneLogix R16.5m and they plan to use the property as a vehicle storage facility. Ian Lourens, chief executive of OneLogix, said that an additional R10m was allocated to assist in the development of the new property, by upgrading facilities and building new offices.
Lourens also had the following to say: "It's going to complement the spread of storage facilities that we have around the country. Our biggest facility is Umlaas Road and at our Pomona Road facility, we store only about 3500 vehicles. The acquisition will allow us to increase that, but it's on the back of market demand.”
One of the biggest investments made in Pomona in recent years was made by 3M, a global company specialising in science and technology. 3M invested an impressive R120m in its Maple Park branch in Pomona in late 2016, thus creating over 75 new full-time jobs for people in the area. The confidence shown by the US-based company in the area of Pomona was a kick-start for more domestic and international investments and ventures in the area.
Pomona was also included in the 2018/2019 Erkurhuleni budget. The budget speech, which took place on 24 May, detailed the achievements of the past 20 months and the new budget allocations for the Erkurhuleni area, which Pomona falls under. A massive sum of R100m has been allocated to finishing stage three of Pomona's Eastern Out Fall Sewer, according to the Kempton Express.
Pomona has received many impressive investments from both international and domestic parties. While much development needs to take place in order to put the area on par with Gauteng's other industrial hotspots, the foundations have been laid for Pomona's success.
