Why Killarney Gardens remains one of the leading industrial nodes in SA

Category Industrial Property News

Known for its close proximity to the N7 freeway which links directly to the N1 highway, Killarney Gardens is one of Cape Town’s most well-established and secure industrial nodes. It is situated next to the larger industrial node of Montague Gardens and bares many similarities to this modern and well-planned industrial area. Easily accessible from most areas of the Peninsula through the road and rail network, as well as on the MyCiTi Bus routes, it’s easy to see why Killarney Gardens is one of South Africa’s most sought-after industrial nodes.

The Killarney Gardens Association has been serving the area for well over 20 years, and played a pivotal role in helping Killarney Gardens become one of the leading industrial parks in South Africa. Their most successful project to date was the implementation of Killarney Gardens Security, which has brought crime in the industrial park down by a whopping 90%. Their next major project is the beautification of the sidewalks as well as installing embayment parking bays to assist with any congestion in the area.

Killarney Gardens borders the famous international motor racing complex, Killarney Raceway (also know as Western Province Motor Club). Since the inception of the raceway in 1947, the complex has grown to include every facet of circuit racing, as well as motocross, karting, super motards, stock cars and drag racing and remains popular among racing enthusiasts – it hosts regular events on its 3.6km race track.

Killarney Gardens also neighbours the small and promising township of Dunoon. This vibrant township now boasts its own MyCiTi bus station and will soon see the opening of a R39.3-million, three-storey library built by the City of Cape Town – a huge investment that aims to provide invaluable resources, encourage knowledge and support learning. A development like this is not only an investment in the education and empowerment of communities, but an investment in the area as a whole, including Killarney Gardens. “An investment like Dunoon is very expensive because you’re not building in part of a complex or an existing structure … You also need to build underground sewerage and electricity,” says Mayoral Committee Member JP Smith. “Libraries are at the heart of our communities. They provide invaluable resources, encourage knowledge and support learning. The money spent on these facilities is an investment in the education and empowerment of communities,” said Smith.

With its dual access to Potsdam/Koeberg Road, close proximity to the N1 highway and placement on the MyCiTi bus route public transport route, the essential position of Killarney Gardens is what makes it an ideal location for many distribution centres to reach their many outlets throughout the region. Some of the more established businesses that call Killarney Gardens home include Fair Cape Dairies, Value Logistics, Millennium Foods, Printech Engineering, Tableview Coachworks as well as numerous small to medium-sized industrial and retail businesses.

Killarney Gardens also plays host to Cape Town’s first bottling plant to “make water from air”. Cape Air Water CEO Brendan Williamson has chosen to begin operations at a warehouse unit in Killarney Gardens, which houses a machine that produces water from the condensation in the air. It currently produces 700 to 800 litres of water per day and retails for R7,99 per 500ml bottle at Spar.
